Kaberuka appointed head of AU peace fund

Chairperson of the Africa Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has appointed Dr. Donald Kaberuka as AU High Representative for the peace fund.

The peace fund was first discussed in September last year under the UN peace and Security meeting held in New York.

The Heads of States welcomed the initiative and had called on the Chairperson to accelerate the appointment.

The High Representative for the peace fund would mobilise additional resources for AU peace and security related activities.

With the new appointment, The Chairperson is sending a strong signal to the International community on the union’s commitment towards finding sustainable, predictable and flexible funding mechanisms to support AU-led peace operations.

Donald Kaberuka, a Rwandan economist and former Minister of Finance, is also the outgoing President of the African Development Bank Group, and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Kaberuka is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of the World Economic Forum, the Mandela Institute (Minds) and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

He is expected to bring his global appreciated knowledge on Development financing to the union as well as his dedication to the African community.
